OUR SHAREHOLDERS

OUR SHAREHOLDERS ARE MEMBERS OF THE KWITHU WOMEN'S GROUP

All of our shareholders are members of the Kwithu Women’s Group (KWG), a community-based organization in Mzuzu City, Malawi. Kwithu Women’s Group was formed in 2004 by a group of hardworking, loving women who recognized the need to feed to orphans and vulnerable children in the community. These women started small – by feeding 20 kids one meal each week – but dreamed big. Today Kwithu feeds over 350 children three times each week.

In addition to hot meals, Kwithu Women’s Group also provides early childhood education, after school-tutoring, counseling and secondary school scholarships and community outreach programs to vulnerable women and children.

KWITHU WOMEN'S GROUP

We are very grateful to the donors and well-wishers because they have stood with us all these years and they continue to do so.

In order to break away from absolute donor dependence and providing a sustainable livelihood to its shareholders, Kwithu Kitchen was formed and registered as a Cooperative in 2013 to venture into business of processing and selling fresh tomatoes in glass jars.

FACTS

Kwithu Kitchen has built a factory to process tomato with a capacity of 1 metric ton per day

In order to ensure adequate supply of desirable quality tomatoes for processing, we mobilized smallholder farmers with the help of Mzuzu ADD from areas surrounding Mzuzu City. We employed 2 well trained Agriculture extension officers who mobilized 501 tomato farmers and organized them into 51 clubs. The officers go out to train the farmers Good Agriculture Practices for tomato farming. The clubs were grouped into 7 zones according to their location which include: Ekwendeni, Bwengu, Luzi, Chigwere, Katope, Kavuzi and Lusangazi.

In each zone we have leadership committees. We also have Lead Farmers, where demonstrations are conducted.

4

We have 2 greenhouses which we use to raise tomato seedlings that we supply to farmers as well as growing tomatoes for processing.

We go out to buy tomatoes from farmers.

Going forward, we will increase the number of farmers in the program
